A MESSAGE FROM MAYOR DEE WEJR
|
It is so nice to see that summer is finally here. There are many things happening in our little City. Street sweeping has been done and I am glad to see the last of our winter dust. We are in the process of flushing the fire hydrants and the city gardens are starting to look great thanks to Lynn and all of her crew. The Lions pool is up and running and it is not unusual to see a line of school kids heading in that direction.
When summer arrives, water restrictions are not far behind. It's hard to realize that we need to conserve water when we have a river running through our city, but it is important to use our water wisely. Please be sure and observe the watering times from 6:00 am to 9:00 am and 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm. If you have an even numbered house you water on even numbered days and if you have an odd numbered house you water on odd numbered days.
In early spring, members of council attended a climate action change seminar at UBC. We have struck a committee of the whole to look into ways of reducing our green house gas emissions and reducing our carbon footprint. This is a project that will be ongoing for many years and will have a significant impact on our way of doing business. Building sustainable communities is the cornerstone of lessening our ghg's. Creating neighborhoods where residents are able to take care of daily needs by walking rather than using transportation is a key factor.
As Jon Turpin says The eagle has landed. And I have to say that I am absolutely thrilled with it. I'm talking about the eagle that was added to the salmon sculpture in front of city hall. I cannot thank the Arts Council and the artists, enough for this beautiful addition to our City. And we're not finished yet. You will see the planting of grasses and trees to complete the project in the near future. Good work everyone!!
Highway #97 is still a priority for council. We were awarded $5 Million in federal and provincial funding allocations for intersection improvements. At this point the Ministry of Transportation has shown us preliminary designs for Hubert Avenue but it will be fall before any detailed plans are available. At that time the Ministry will hold public consultations so all of the community will have a chance to have some input.
Stanley Avenue is looking great. This is a very popular walking route so it will be great to have a safe sidewalk all the way up Cliffview Drive and down to Salmon Arm Drive. I'm very impressed with how quickly the project is proceeding.
I would also like to take this opportunity to congratulate all of the AL Fortune 2009 grads. It was wonderful to take part in the graduation ceremonies. Good luck in all you do!!
If anyone wants to email me they can do so at mayordee@telus.net . If you would like to see me in person, please call city hall to make an appointment or just grab me when you see me around town or in my garden.
